The sculptor Gerhard Marcks was a master at the State Bauhaus in Weimar and from 1925 head of the sculpture class at the Burg Giebichenstein art school in Halle, whose rectorate he took over in 1928. In 1933 he was dismissed by the National Socialists, who then defamed several of his works in the “Degenerate Art” exhibition. In 1945 he received an appointment at the Landeskunstschule in Hamburg and worked freelance from 1950.
