Description

Watercolour on paper, 24 x 34 cm, including frame 28 x 38 cm. Signed and dated Elisabeth Warling Arild 1915.

Elisabeth Warling (1858—1915) was a Swedish artist active around the turn of the 20th century, known for her open-air painting and her evocative watercolors. She often painted landscapes directly out in nature, capturing the shifts of light and the movement of nature with a spontaneous and sketchy expression.

During her studies at the Académie Colarossi in Paris, she encountered a freer and more sketchy painting than that which characterized academic teaching in Sweden. Experiences in France helped shape her light-sensitive and directly observant imagery.

Warling also came to be associated with the artists' colony in Arild in Skåne, which around the turn of the century developed into an important gathering place for Nordic artists. The Arild Colony attracted painters through its distinctive seascape and bright light, and the place became a centre for open-air painting in Sweden. Warling was part of this artistic milieu and helped to strengthen the orientation of the colony.
