Frame dimensions: 63 x 65 cm.
Magnus Wijkström (1957—2019) was born and raised in Eslöv and later became mainly active in Malmö. After a basic art education, he continued his studies at the Valand Academy of Fine Arts, where he gained early attention through exhibition activities. During his lifetime he conducted about thirty exhibitions, while his artistic activity was largely carried out alongside work outside the field of art.
Wijkström's early output included landscapes and still lifes with influences from the pop arts. Over time, his expression evolved towards a nonfigurative painting in which geometric structures, symbolic forms and tightly cohesive pictorial spaces took on a central importance. In many works, a richness of emblematic forms and a search for new visual systems emerge, often with a restrained colorite in which the rhythmics of form and the dynamics of the composition are given precedence. This quest for variety and renewal characterizes his entire oeuvre and testifies to an artist in continuous development.
After the artist's passing in 2019, there was an extensive production of about a thousand paintings, executed mainly in oil and acrylic. Posthumous exhibitions have subsequently presented a selection of these works and helped to bring to light a consistent and long-lasting artistic work in which the desire for experimentation, awareness of form and a persistent exploration of the abstract imagery constitute central qualities.
