Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel (1883-1971) was first a hat fashionist before opening her own fashion house in 1918 in Paris. There she made a success of her practical but luxurious fashion and made her clients look elegant with simple means. Chanel represented the new modern woman, she was herself the woman she designed for and accounts for several iconic creations. In 1927, she designs the “purple black”. In 1954, her tailored Chanel suit was introduced, which today is a classic among her creations. She basically designed until her death in 1971.
The Chanel fashion house has come to be managed by a series of designers after her death, but perhaps the most influential and associated with Chanel is the fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld who managed to breathe life into the house but also manage Chanel's legacy.
The original shoe model created Coco Chanel in 1957. According to legend, she was inspired by seeing a valet wearing a black-toed shoe on the Duke of Westminster's yacht. The black toe was both a practical solution to hide dirt and a design effect that made the foot look shorter while giving the leg a lengthened effect. The original combination was beige and black, just like the auction shoe.
