Description

Otto Schoff (1888-1938), girl reading, oil on canvas, signed, on the back with old labels, here titled or inscribed 'From the estate of OTTO SCHOFF No. 029', ca. 58 x 78 cm, with frame approx. 69 x 89 cm

PROVENANCE: Schleswig-Holstein private collection, acquired around 1965

After an apprenticeship as a decorative painter, Schoff received drawing lessons at the Kunstgewerbemuseum Berlin and was a student of Emil Orlik there. He stayed in Paris in 1913/14 and settled in Berlin after the First World War. Eroticism and male and female homosexuality were central themes of his work. In 1937, various of his works were confiscated and destroyed as part of the “Degenerate Art” campaign.

Condition

Tiny hole in the upper right area of the picture, a few minimal breaks in the painting layer, partially with shrinkage cracks in the area of the legs.
