After Christian Daniel Rauch (1777-1857), Goethe, alabaster, 19th century, inscribed on the reverse 'Chr. Smoke, and monogrammed 'SP' (in ligature), height ca. 53 cm
The life-size bust is based on the famous Goethe Portrait Rauch created in 1820/21, which is known in handwritten versions (including at the Museum of Fine Arts in Leipzig) and numerous replicas. He created the model for the Goethe portrait in 1820 during a visit to the poet, at whose request Rauch sculpted a model of his face. From Goethe himself, Rauch's work was met with great goodwill. Rauch's Goethe Portrait was based on ancient models and created a unique portrait of the 70-year-old poet.
Christian Daniel Rauch was a student of Johann Gottfried Schadow, the most important representative of German classicism and the founder of the Berlin School of Sculpture.
Darkened brownish, slightly dirty and in places with scratches, small rubbing and stains.
