It is a reduced version of Rauch's famous bust, which was created in 1820/21 and is known in handwritten versions (including at the Museum of Fine Arts in Leipzig) and numerous replicas. Rauch created the model for the Goethe portrait in 1820 during a visit to the poet, at whose request he sculpted a model of his face. From Goethe himself, Rauch's work was met with great goodwill. Rauch's Goethe Portrait was based on ancient models and created a unique portrait of the 70-year-old poet.
Christian Daniel Rauch was a student of Johann Gottfried Schadow, the most important representative of German classicism and the founder of the Berlin School of Sculpture.
