Andreas Dirks (1865-1922), Fischer off Sylt, oil on canvas, signed, ca. 82 x 122 cm, with stucco frame approx. 115 x 152 cm

PROVENANCE: Hamburg private collection, acquired on Sylt in 1996.

Dirks was born in Tinnum on Sylt. He first studied at the Hamburg Trade School, then with Eugen Dücker at the Düsseldorf Academy of Arts. From 1887 to 1893 he attended the Grand Ducal Saxon School of Art in Weimar, where he studied with Leopold von Kalckreuth and Theodor Hagen. He settled in Düsseldorf in 1895, but regularly visited his home in Sylt and maintained a studio on the island.
