Isidore Bonheur was the brother of the well-known animal painter Rosa Bonheur. Like his sister, Isidore specialized in depicting animals and has been exhibiting at the Paris Salon since 1848. His bronzes were also popular in England and he created a wide variety of works for the English market.
Many of his bronzes were published by the caster Hippolyte Peyrol, to whom Bonheur was related. These castings are exceptionally well executed, which suggests close collaboration between the caster and the sculptor.
