Description

Josef Kohlschein (1884-1958), Winter Sun, oil on canvas, 1910, signed and dated 'Josef Kohlschein d. Jüng. 1910', on the back with an old exhibition label of the 'Lower Rhine Artists' Association, titled by hand here and inscribed with the name of the artist, also locally inscribed at the bottom of the stretcher frame 'Castle Antfeld bei Brigge i.W. ', ca. 71 x 70 cm, with frame approx. 91 x 90 cm

Josef Kohlschein the Younger studied at the Academy in Düsseldorf from 1899 and became a master student in Eugen Dücker's landscape class.
He was one of the founders of the Lower Rhine Secessionist Artists' Group and was close to the Sonderbund. He advocated plein air painting and was influenced by French Impressionism. With brilliant colors and small patches of paint, he created landscapes, interiors and wonderful floral still lifes.
