Emma Ekwall studied at the Art Academy in Stockholm 1865—1871. As the first female artist, she received the Royal Reward Medal in 1871. Her paintings, often interiors with playing children, testify to a technically very talented painter. As a person Emma was quiet and shy, but audiences loved her painting and Emma Ekwall became a diligently hired portrait painter.
Over the years, Emma fell in love with flowers as a motif and painted fresh, soft floral still lifes.
