Osterroth began to study painting in the late 1920s. Together with his wife Anna, he was involved in the Social Democratic resistance organization 'Red Shock Troop' and, among other things, took over courier trips and accommodation for politically and racially persecuted people. After the war, he settled in Darmstadt in 1953 and developed a restrained surrealist style.
