Frame dimensions 44 x 58 cm.
Ulf Ernst Ingemar Wikström (born 23 April 1916 in Stockholm and died 10 November 1981) was a Swedish painter with an autodidactic background. Although he originally trained as a folk school teacher, his artistic trajectory came to dominate his life. His art is marked by an evolution from expressionism to a more Cubist style, where he worked primarily with landscape depictions and still lifes in oil and gouache.
Wikström traveled to France to deepen his artistic knowledge through self-study, and French painting came to influence his design language. His palette was often cool and the expression thoughtful, with an emphasis on geometric forms in his later works. He debuted as an exhibitor in the late 1940s and had solo exhibitions in Skara, Mjölby, Örebro, Karlskoga and Stockholm, among others. He also exhibited with other artists, such as Eric Harry Olson in Kalmar in 1949 and Alf Wesström in Eksjö in 1951.
The auction's painting fits well into Wikström's production. It is reminiscent of his later works in which he explored spatiality and simplified forms rather than striving for an accurate depiction of nature. Through his stylized expression, he creates a modernist interpretation of nature, in which colors and shapes interplay to give a feeling rather than a detailed depiction.
