Description

190 x 132 cm, 196 x 138 cm. Literature: Sakari Saarikivi No. 1. Mentioned in the text on page 24; freely translated: Beginning in 1891, Hugo Simberg attended the Viborg Drawing School in the evenings alongside his schooling. His art studies remained limited, however, as the actual schooling with his every year increasingly extensive homework was a time-consuming task. By the time he started in the monastic classes, he was in any case already a well-known and recognized school artist, who was commissioned, among other things, to create decorations and scenographies for the school's celebrations. For such a school party was painted the strange allegory “The Carpenter's Mystery”, completed in 1892, which is preserved in its original size and as a watercolor sketch with small marker lines. The subject of the picture is peculiar: a poor carpenter from the country standing in a snowy landscape with his toolbox on the ground, scratching his neck, looking unprepared. From the left edge of the picture extends a hand offering the man money. Although the painting is made as a backdrop to a scene and the subject obviously dictated by it, it seems to have a deeper meaning in comparison to Simberg's later works. It shows an aspiring symbolist experimenting with mind painting, and the carpenter with his long hair, beard and spiked trousers is the ancestor of all those broom gums and Haka-Jussin that Simberg immortalized in his later works.
