3805072. ERIC GRATE. Sculpture, “Autumn”, Stoneware.
Description
Signed Eric Grate. height 54 cm
History:
“Autumn” is one of four limestone statues in “Seasons” that Grate completed in 1944 to be placed in the Chancellery in Stockholm. Grate won the competition, where four renowned sculptors (Ivar Johansson, Nils Möllerberg, Nils Sjögren and Grate himself) had been invited to participate. In Ragnar von Holten's book Eric Grate, the sculptures are described: “The critics agreed that Eric in 'The Seasons' renewed his design towards a heavier and more serious sculptural form while maintaining a fine sensibility both for the models and for the material. 'Autumn' was considered one of his main works and a pinnacle of modern Swedish sculpture and, like 'Spring', harvested only roses when they were exhibited in other contexts.“.
