Gösta Calmeyer (1927—2022) was a Swedish-Norwegian painter and illustrator, known for his realistic beach motifs from Österlen and his innovative collage works in which he combined different materials. He was born in New York but spent most of his life in Sweden and Norway, where he both worked as an artist and divided his time between the two countries.
Calmeyer studied at the Statens håndverks- og kunstindustriskole in Oslo from 1949—1950 and had an extensive career as an artist. He exhibited at several major galleries and museums in both Sweden and Norway, including Ystad Art Museum and Liljevalch's Spring Salon in Stockholm. His work was also exhibited internationally, including in the United States, Finland and Germany.
In addition to his exhibitions and realistic beach paintings, he is also known for his public decorations, which can be found in, among others, Östra Hoby parish home and the youth care school in Örkelljunga. He was a member of the Scanian artists' group “6 lineages” formed in 1966 and was awarded several scholarships during his lifetime, including the Skånes Konstföreningen scholarship in 1976.
Calmeyer also created illustrations for many schoolbooks in both Sweden and Norway, and his art is represented in several significant museums, such as the Nationalmuseum and Moderna Museet in Stockholm, as well as museums and public collections around Scandinavia.
