Ernst Eitner was a founding member of the Hamburg Artists' Club founded in 1897, an association of young artists who wanted to establish open-air painting in northern Germany following the example of the French Impressionists. In the course of this, they tried to make local pictorial themes more popular again. At the end of the 19th century, Eitner's paintings were still referred to as 'smudges. ' The artist was later hailed as “Monet of the North.” With his colorful impressionism, Eitner is considered one of the main representatives of artistic renewal in Hamburg. In 2017, the Jenisch House in Hamburg presented a major retrospective on the occasion of the 150th anniversary. The artist's birthday. Eitner's works include the Hamburger Kunsthalle, the Altona Museum, the Schleswig-Holstein State Museum Schloss Gottorf and many others.
