3523471. HM ARMOURED SHIP “Queen Victoria”.

Description

Length of the model 122 cm.
Mounted on wooden board, length 130 cm.
Queen Victoria, officially HM Armoured Ship Queen Victoria, was an armoured ship of the Swedish Royal Navy. She formed the Sweden class together with Sweden and Gustaf V. They became the largest armored ships to date and also the last. The armament consisted of four 28.3 cm guns in two double turrets and eight 15.2 cm guns arranged in a double and six single turrets. With the new guns and heavy armour, they also became the heaviest and longest ships to date with their 7,600 tons and 120 yards from fore to aft. It took a crew of 427 men to operate these ships. When the ship was scrapped, its twin 15.2 cm guns were moved to the Victoria Fort outside Vuollerim, which because of this became named after the ship.

Queen Victoria was launched at Götaverk on 15 September 1917. The christening was officiated by the Queen with the words: “In a time of mourning — in defense of our freedom — I invite you, proud ship, Queen Victoria to slip out and begin your course. God protect your future.“

World War II
The winter of 1939—1940 was severe with severe glaciation in the Horsfjärden area. In connection with reports of the German naval movements in preparation for Operation Weserübung, the Chief of the Coastal Fleet had a chute broken up and moved Queen Victoria and a destroyer group into open water.

The Ship Dog Nicke
On board the Queen Victoria was for a period the ship's dog Nicke, a rough-haired fox terrier who was taken care of by the crew. The dog, which is mentioned in several places in the literature of the armored ship era, had a specially sewn sailor costume and its own service book. Ship documents show that Nicke mustered on board 1 January 1940 as a 3rd class seaman with ship number 900 and that he was later appointed a corporal. Promotion to furir followed as per ship orders 31 October 1943. Nicke remained on the ship until at least August 1946.
