Zao Wou-Ki (1920-2013) was a prominent Chinese-French painter famous for his unique style that fuses Chinese tradition and Western modernity. He was born in China and moved to Paris in 1948, where he settled and developed his career. His style features lyrical abstraction, where gestural and expressive elements blend with a palette of vibrant colours and organic shapes. Influenced by abstract expressionism and traditional Chinese painting, Zao Wou-Ki created emotional and dynamic landscapes evoking a sense of movement and depth. He experimented with various techniques, including the use of energetic brushstrokes and the layering of paint to create rich textures. His work has been exhibited worldwide and is still admired for its visual beauty and evocative power.
