Emanuel (Ritter von) Stöckler (December 24, 1819 Nikolsburg, Moravia - November 5, 1893 Twelve times Greien, today Bolzano).
IT studied landscape painting at the Vienna Academy with Thomas Ender and Joseph Mössmer. Almost annual exhibitions since 1838. In the 1840s, ES an extended study trip that took him to the Orient via Switzerland and Italy. His journey also takes him to Montenegro and Constantinople. It is very possible that impressions of his journey are conveyed in the present painting. On his return journey he meets Bucharest and portrays the prince of Wallachia. Apparently he succeeded in this, because in later years ES rises even to the Russian court painter. Due to a remarkable donation to the Austrian Institute for Historical Research, ES 1879 the Knight's Cross (Knight of) of the Franz Joseph Order.
In earlier years he also received the Gundel Prize in 1839 and the Heinrich Füger Prize in 1840.
With the offered oil painting one can probably speak of a rarity. Depictions of oriental painting were still rare in the so-called Vormärz epoch. In addition, in this context, the large format impresses with the good condition and can certainly be described as the main work of this creative epoch. Dating around 1845/148, oil on canvas, frame ca. 150 x 120cm, painting approx. 127x98 cm. The painting was in Hanseatic private ownership for generations.
Frame minimally bumped.
