Description

Heinrich Siepmann (1904-2002), 'Untitled', 2002, collage, mixed media, signed and dated: '2002', dimensions approx.: 54x44.5cm.

Heinrich Siepmann (* November 30, 1904 in Mülheim an der Ruhr; † December 16, 2002 there) belonged to the second generation of Constructivism. From 1925 to 1927 he studied at the Folkwang School in Essen with Josef Urbach, Karl Kriete and Joseph Enseling. In 1948 he was a co-founder of the artist group "junger westen" in Recklinghausen. Even Siepmann's early representational works from the 1930s and 1940s fascinate with their strict compositional image structure, and the artist, who was closely associated with Mülheim throughout his life, consistently continued to develop his way into non-representational, geometric abstraction in the post-war years.
After Siepmann left formal strictness in favor of informal structures for a short time in the 1960s due to the influence of his artist colleagues, towards the end of the decade and especially from the 1970s he increasingly turned to a formal language that understood color and form on the canvas as independent pictorial means and shows them in compositions that are completely harmoniously balanced. It is perhaps Siepmann's greatest merit that, despite his calculated creations, there is always a lyrical element inherent in the works.
