Kain Tapper (1930-2004), Paws, 1996, painted wood relief, monogrammed and dated lower right, 105 x 40 cm, in painted O-display frame HxWxD approx. 107 x 41.7 x 6.5 cm.

The Finnish sculptor Tapper is known for his raw woodwork, which he works with an ax and often covers with clayey chalk paint or black burn marks. Like the present piece, his reliefs live from the cracked structure of the wood and the traces of processing.

PROVENANCE: Private collection Hamburg, acquired directly from the artist in 1999 after Tapper was awarded the Henrik Steffens Prize in Germany in 1999.
