Dettmann comes from Adelby near Flensburg. He studied at the Berlin Art Academy and, under the influence of Max Liebermann, initially turned to landscape painting. Alongside Max Liebermann, Walter Leistikow, Otto Heinrich Engel and others, he was one of the founding members of the Berlin Secession in 1898. From 1900 he was director of the Königsberg Art Academy. At the beginning of the 20th century he was regarded as the 'pioneer of impressionism' in Germany. He later made a name for himself as a war painter. Dettmann's murals are located in the entrance area of the Kiel City Hall and the City Hall in Altona.
