The artist was born Orla Andreas Heinrik Jacobsen in Copenhagen. As a young man, he decided to pursue an apprenticeship as a designer and set designer and began calling himself 'Muff'. He was particularly known for his costumes and sets of the 1920s. Since the 1930s, Muff has also created oil paintings with mythologically inspired scenes and figures, as well as abstract compositions. He also worked in Stockholm and Berlin, among other places.
