At the age of 16, John Bauer leaves his hometown of Jönköping and moves to Stockholm. He begins studies at the Technical School and Althin's School of Painting before being enrolled as a student at the Art Academy in the fall of 1900. Four years later, he heads to Lapland to get material for illustrations on behalf of book publisher Carl Adam Victor Lundholm. The following year he exhibited at Valand in Gothenburg. Just before Christmas 1907, Tomtar och troll is published, illustrated by Bauer. It becomes a breakthrough for him and he becomes a name for a much wider audience. The auction's ten lithographs were published under the title Troll at his brother Ernst's publishing house in 1915, three years before John Bauer's tragic death.
