1872794. WALDEMAR LORENTZON. "Bathing girls", oil on Board, signed and dated 1925.

Description

Dimensions: 35 x 39 cm.

March 8, 1924, Waldemar Lorentzon and Erik Olson move into sculptor Arvid Källström's apartment in Paris. From here, they can look straight down into Fernand Léger's private studio. Through GAN's provision, they are accepted as students of the famous French artist. On Tuesdays and Fridays, he teaches a cubist expression that has sometimes been called tubism, a stripped-down expression with dominant tube formations. In the fall of the same year, Léger exhibited with his students. The visitors are wealthy in number, but for the Swedish artists it means no significant income.

Waldemar Lorentzon is clearly influenced by his teacher and in these years paints several works that are close to him. The auction's painting is a good example of this, where the naked female figures are constructed in a way that was the highest French fashion in art in 1925. In a letter dated November 15, 1925 this year, Lorentzon writes to Egon Östlund after returning to Paris after some time in Sweden: "It is wonderful to be here again, in the middle of the seat of art, where streams from all over the world flow. You feel that you are alive, you breathe an air that stimulates both spirit and body. If I were as pretentious as Gösta, I would say: "I stretch out the wings of my spirit and embrace the world". When I sit here in my admittedly quiet hotel room, but here I hear the mighty pulses of the big city beating, the blood increases its flow in the veins, life increases within me and I feel that I am now truly alive. Thus, I will do my best to stay, so that I can continue to feel truly alive." Provenance: Beijers Auctions 2 Dec 1991. Illustrated page 92 in cat.
