Alvar Granström was a costume designer and textile designer. He was a student of John Jon-And at the Opera's costume studio. For more than 40 years he made costumes for productions at the Royal Theatre, the Dramatic Theater and other stages as well as for film. He collaborated with, among others, Per-Axel Branner, Olof Molander, Göran Gentele, Birgit Cullberg, Ivo Cramér, Arne Mattsson and Karl Gerhard.
In addition, he designed textiles and made liturgical works for Atelier Libraria and Märtha Gahn. Granström is represented at, among others, the National Museum.
In 1988 he published the book Ballet and costume, which has been used as a textbook in dance education, and in 1990 Women and crinolines. In 1992, his open-hearted memoir Just a costume designer was published.
