Wheel thrown porcelain,
Plate 27cm x 2cm
Bowl 17cm x 7cm
Beaker 7cm x 10cm
Katherine Message:
I use porcelain and a variety of ceramic techniques in my work. My starting point is usually throwing on the wheel and turning. Decorative pieces are then altered before they dry, manipulating the shape, adding to or carving into it. Some of my sculptural pieces are constructed by hand building.
The Jurassic Coast near my home has an influence on my work, in the colours I choose when mixing my glazes and the forms of my sculptural pieces.
My functional ware is all about enjoying the hand-made every day. A tiny vase holds a flower from the garden, a beautifully glazed cup, fitting the hand with ease, holds a comforting drink.
Recent sculptural pieces are inspired by sea-worn shell fragments and focus on the play of light and shade and the enticing smoothness of water-worn edges. I am fascinated by the process of erosion and by what remains. As stand-alone pieces or placed in groups they provide a calm focus.
Direct from artists studio - apparently in gallery condition, see images.
