Roger Dell Seddon
Roger was brought up in Anglesey where he acquired a love for the sea and sailing. In the mid 1970’s he qualified in his chosen profession and progressed to become a Fellow of The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors. After a career spanning 40 years he retired early to pursue a new life doing what he had held dear and had practised over all those years. The art of drawing and painting. Dorset has been his family home since 1983.
He is now an established Dorset painter of landscapes and coastal scenes working mainly with oils. Roger was taught by a professional teaching artist to paint in the traditional manner of 19C and 20C English landscape painters and he adapts their working methods and processes to produce his original work. The underlying influences of Turner, Edward Seago and Fred Cuming RA feature in many of his paintings. These can be moody and atmospheric in capturing time and place and are characterised by their tonal qualities, interesting optical effects and energetic brushstrokes. Recent work is less resolved allowing viewers to participate in a personal journey of discovery and interpretation.
Roger is fascinated by the way colours, mood and atmosphere alter daily throughout the seasons in different light conditions. Big dramatic skies feature in many of his paintings and create opportunities for Roger to experiment with the intricacies of colour harmonisation, value, opacity and transparency.
Throughout the year Roger paints en plein air to capture the essence of the moment on location, but he also works on larger studio paintings. Beyond the studio he will use pencil, pen and ink, charcoal and pastel to produce finished drawings and sketches of subjects that capture his interest. Although very much a Dorset artist, some of his drawings and paintings are based on travel overseas, including Mediterranean Europe, India, Central and South America and New Zealand.
His work is in private collections throughout the UK and abroad.
