Victor Vasarely was born Gyözö Vásárhelyi on April 9, 1908 in Pécs, Hungary. Vasarely began his artistic training in 1927 at a private drawing school in Budapest. In the following year, the artist moves to the training center "Mühely" (Eng. "Workshop") under the direction of Sándor Bortnyik. At this school, the ideas of the Bauhaus are primarily conveyed.
After moving to Paris in 1930, Vasarely worked successfully as a commercial artist, systematically researching the optical and emotional possibilities of various graphic media. In 1947, this led him to the realization that with geometric means sensory perceptions could be evoked that conveyed new ideas about space, matter and energy. Vasarely develops an independent geometric abstraction, the variations of which lead to optical patterns with kinetic effects.
The artist arranges geometric shapes in bright colors in a latticework in such a way that the eye gets the impression of fluctuating movement. Vasarely thus significantly influenced the emergence of Op Art.
In 1954, Victor Vasarely's active commitment to art in public space began with the organization of the university in Caracas. Vasarely designed murals made of metal and ceramics primarily for buildings in France. From 1955 to 1968 his works can be seen regularly at the documenta. The artist designs for the XX. Olympiad in Munich the official spiral logo. In 1976, Victor Vasarely founded the Fondation Vasarely in Aix-en-Provence, with the help of which an institute for contemporary design and architecture was set up in 1981. In 1976, the Vasarely Museum opened in his native town of Pécs. Another follows in 1987 in Zichy Castle/Budapest.
Victor Vasarely died in Paris on March 15, 1997. The foundation he founded had to close shortly afterwards. However, the maintenance of the artist's oeuvre is ensured by the processing of the estate by his daughter Michelle.
