Complet de ses 39 volumes, "Encyclopédie, ou dictionnaire raisonné des sciences, des arts et des métiers, often abbreviated Encyclopédie, sometimes called the French Encyclopedia, was a French encyclopedia. Its subtitle means "systematic dictionary of science, arts and crafts". It was first published in the years 1751-1772 in Paris under the direction of Denis Diderot and (for the mathematical department) Jean d'Alembert.

Encyclopédie was a pioneering and influential encyclopedia, with the goal of processing and expressing the scientific knowledge of its time and giving expression to the philosophical outlook of the Enlightenment. The work was received by many with great enthusiasm, but met with skepticism from the conservative forces of the time. Encyclopédie led to the publication of several other encyclopedic works on a scientific basis in France, England and Germany.
