1301061. OWE ZERGE. "Saint Sebastian", oil on canvas, signed and dated 1925.

Description

171x65 cm, frame dimensions 183x78 cm.

Depicted as Saint Sebastian is the friend and traveling companion Hugo Holmer (1915-2002), Villansvånga.

Note: A patron saint. During the Middle Ages, when the Black Death swept across Europe, Sebastian became a patron saint against the disease. As such, he is depicted pierced by arrows wearing a loincloth, tied to a tree in a suffering pose. During the 18th century, such images and figurines came to be gathered within homoerotic circles and Saint Sebastian was adopted by them as a patron saint. As such, Sebastian must also have been actualized during the late 20th century among homosexuals with HIV and AIDS.

Provenance: The picture was in the artist's possession until he died, after which the painting was sold Galleri 19, Torestorp, Bert Gederyd. Although many interested parties made numerous attempts over the years to buy this particular work by Owe Zerge, he always refused to sell his favorite work.
