Bernard Buffet studied art history at the Lycée Carnot and from 1943 to 1945 at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Buffet joined with other painters to form the group "L'homme-témoin" and belonged to the artistic avant-garde scene. At the end of the 1940s, the painters Maurice Utrillo and Georges Rouault introduced their friend Buffet to the art dealer Maurice Girandin, who signed him on. In the years that followed, Buffet developed a distinctive and realistic style inspired by Rembrandt van Rijn, Théodore Géricault, Gustave Courbet, Henri Edmond Cross and Vincent van Gogh. He was celebrated as a painter of existentialism, was at times considered the legitimate successor to Pablo Picasso and achieved prices like this.
From 1950 to 1958 Bernard Buffet lived with Pierre Bergé.#1 In 1958, Bernard Buffet married singer and actress Annabel Schwob. The couple adopted three children#2: Virginie (* 1962), Danielle (* 1963) and Nicolas (* 1973).
Buffett, who later developed Parkinson's disease and was unable to work, committed suicide at his home in Tourtour in 1999.
The work of the artist Bernard Buffet includes more than 8000 paintings and numerous prints. His works are exhibited in all major museums, such as the Tate Gallery in London, the Kunstmuseum Basel or the Musée National d'Art Moderne in Paris. The Bernard Buffet Museum has existed in Japan since 1973 and houses the largest collection with over 2000 works.#3 Prices fell sharply in the last quarter of the 20th century. While his works were often stored in museums ("... Bernard Buffet, for example, was regarded as a kitsch painter"#4), many Buffet reproductions turned up at flea markets.
In the 21st century, interest in Buffet's work increased again. Several very successful exhibitions have taken place in France and around the world. In 2016, British author Nicholas Foulkes published Bernard Buffet: The Invention of the Modern Mega-Artist, in which he provides a controversial biographical account of Buffet's life and work.
Bernard Buffet's works are again fetching very high prices on the art market.
