The Furniture Dealer Gunnar Silverberg (1923–2025)
Gunnar Silverberg began his career in his father Axel Silverberg’s furniture workshop, where he learned the craft of furniture making from the ground up. In the 1940s, he opened his own furniture store on Baltzarsgatan in Malmö. When the property was later slated for demolition, he was offered the opportunity to lease premises on three floors in the newly constructed Valand Building. This would go on to become one of southern Sweden’s most significant furniture stores.
His interest in Oriental porcelain was also reflected in the range he offered, and he undertook purchasing trips to, among other places, China and London. Scandinavian ceramics and furniture design were likewise close to his heart.
The auction’s one hundred lots illustrate the breadth of his collecting—spanning decorative arts and furniture—as well as his inspiring collaborations with designers and his unwavering commitment to quality. Even after passing his 100th birthday, he remained constantly curious about the world around him.
