There was a time when the aesthetic winds blew in the most favourable of directions. It was the 1920s, and on the Continent, a decorative, luxurious — and at times perhaps even opulent — ideal emerged, taking over salons and hotel lobbies alike. At home, however, a cooler, more ascetic front moved in. Designers, architects, and urban planners drew inspiration from classical ideals rooted in the 18th century and, long before that, in antiquity. Yet the expression was now more refined, more delicate, and came to be aptly named Swedish Grace.
Soon after, this elegance was joined by the strict, disciplined forms born of progressive modernist movements that relied entirely on geometry and proportion, rejecting ornament and excess.
It was in this climate that decorative pewter came to triumph. Small ornamental objects — perfect as gifts — found their way into Swedish homes. Their creators were attuned to the times, navigating with care the stylistic currents where tradition met reform and innovation. The result was a rich array of imaginative, elegant, and at times even humorous objects of art and design.
Through Gomér & Andersson Nyköping, we are now given the opportunity to rediscover these small historical treasures in all their variety. Here, works by renowned artisans such as Nils Fougstedt, Jacob Ängman, and Sylvia Stave mingle with creations by perhaps lesser-known names like Knut Eriksson, Celestin Andersson, and Thorild Knutsson.
A warm welcome to Gomér & Andersson Nyköping and the theme Scandinavian Pewter 1920–1940!
