Sometime in the late 1880s, Carl Wilhelmson found himself at a crossroads: would he become a lithographer or fully commit to a career as an artist? We, of course—and fortunately—don’t need to wonder about the path he chose, but things could have turned out differently. In 1881, he was accepted as an apprentice lithographer at the Gothenburg firm Meyer & Köster. Seven years later, thanks to a travel stipend from the Kommerskollegium, he traveled to Leipzig for further training with Wezel & Naumann and C.G. Naumann, where everything seemed to be progressing well.
But then he made his way to Paris at his own expense, and it was likely there that his course was set. In 1895, he exhibited at the Paris Salon, and now, nearly 130 years later, Stockholms Auktionsverk Göteborg presents a small selection of his works. Alongside three watercolors and an oil painting, we are treated to examples of Carl Wilhelmson’s mastery as a printmaker through a selection of etchings that truly showcase him at his best.
You are warmly invited to discover one of the greatest Swedish artists of the late 19th century, Carl Wilhelmson!
