In conjunction with Gothenburg celebrating its 400th anniversary this year, we at Gothenburg's Auction House want to commemorate our city with a special auction.
The auction house was founded in 1681 and is nearly as old as the city itself. The auction features items related to Gothenburg's 400-year history. Through the trading city, millions of items have passed, leaving their mark on the place and its inhabitants. Through the trade with Asia conducted by the Swedish East India Company for 100 years in the 17th and 18th centuries, nearly 50 million items were unloaded in the harbor, including a significant amount of porcelain. Not everything stayed in Sweden but was exported to other countries. Fine examples of Chinese export porcelain from the company's era are included in the auction.
The camera company Hasselblad holds a significant place in Gothenburg's history, and we are pleased to present four cameras, including an Anniversary camera from 1997. The catalog also includes items related to shipping and souvenirs from Gothenburg's 300th-anniversary celebration in 1923.
The city's artists are represented, including Ian Rusth, Albin Amelin, and Inge Schiöler. Estonian painter Erik Haamer has depicted a fine portrait of M/S Gripsholm moored in the harbor, executed in 1946.
Welcome to dive into a part of Gothenburg's history!
