Mauritz Karström was an artist who leaned into the act of painting. Rich in associations and with an open mind, art flowed from him in his prolific production. In the fishing harbor, a stone's throw from Göteborgs Auktionsverk, Karström had his studio. There, he found the strong and vital light for his creative process. He often spoke of God and spirits, saying that he only tried to be himself and not pay attention to prevailing trends. Among his artistic influences, Karström found inspiration in artists like Olle Skagerfors, Carl Kylberg, and Willem de Kooning.
Karström was diagnosed with schizophrenia, which was also the case with two other colorists, Åke Göransson and Inge Schiöler. The similarities among the city's artists are striking, both in influences and in their artistic expression, characterized by expressive and intense use of color and spiritual content.
Göteborgs Auktionsverk presents here 18 artworks by Mauritz Karström. They are created using a mix of techniques such as pastel, watercolor, gouache, and oil, which was a common approach in his work. Figurative motifs are often present, appearing in various forms either together or alone.
