Crafoord Auktioner Stockholm is proud to present the theme auction "Good Art," where a selection of interesting artists and works of the month are showcased. These deserve to be part of a context and, hopefully, brighten many walls.
We are now advocating for art and showcasing artists like Anders Zorn, Ivar Arosenius, Carl Larsson, John Bauer, Ferdinand Boberg, Elias Erdtman, Einar Jolin, Knut Lundström, Oskar Bergman, Endre Nemes, Richard Uutmaa, Man Ray, Max Ernst, Salvador Dali, Jussi Mäntynen, Frank Stella, Victor Vasarely, Arman, Bert-Håge Häverö, Mauritz Karström, Lars Erik Falk, Kai Glans, Marianne Lindberg De Geer, Ove Carlson, Fredrik Wretman, Berndt Wennström, and Birgit Broms, among others.
The name "Good Art" has been used in other contexts before. In 1941, the exhibition "GOOD ART IN EVERY HOME" opened under the auspices of HSB. The aim of the exhibition was to advocate for good art in homes. The preface in the catalog mentions that it is not enough to build good homes; art must also have its place. The main principle was to offer good art to a broader public at affordable prices. To ensure that the art was genuinely "good," a jury of renowned artists and art critics was engaged to scrutinize the artworks for the exhibition. As a result, GAN's oil painting "Berns" from 1918 was available for 5,000 kronor, tempera painting "Ratten" for 350 kronor, and "Laboratorium" for 500 kronor. Other names involved in the "art for the people" project included Oskar Bergman, Einar Jolin, Arne Jones, Isaac Grünewald, Sixten Lundbohm, Erik and Axel Olson. The 10th-anniversary exhibition was held at Liljevalchs konsthall in Stockholm.
In the same year, 1941, Gunnar Hjorthén (1913-1997) opened Galleri God Konst on Vallgatan in Gothenburg. He came to be regarded as something of an institution in Gothenburg's art scene. The gallery later moved to locations such as Drottninggatan, Konserthuset, and Södra vägen. Hjorthén dedicated himself to promoting and highlighting "young art" with artists like Ivan Ivarson, Karin Parrow, Ragnar Sandberg, and Inge Schiöler. Thanks in large part to Hjorthén and Galleri God Konst, Gothenburg Schoolism became a recognized concept. Similar to the Swedish-French Art Gallery, Hjorthén early on sought connections in Paris and, through the gallery, facilitated contact with the new painting. For instance, in 1953, Tsuguharu Foujita exhibited his work through the gallery.
