"An unusual figure in world history is Barthélemy Lauvergne. He was a French artist who did not hesitate to embark on voyages and expeditions to the edges of civilization. And it is thanks to him that we can see La Recherche pitching in the waters off the capital of the Faroe Islands, Tórshavn. The painting was executed in 1839 and captures the French corvette in the midst of the scientific research voyage that came to be known as the La Recherche expedition. With Joseph Paul Gaimard as its figurehead, the aim was to document the living conditions in the barren north through scientific observations, artistic depictions, and literary renderings. In addition to observations, the members of the expedition also acquired objects during the journey, and it is from there that the auction's offerings are sourced. Welcome to explore Sami objects with a particularly special provenance from a time when researchers studied the aurora borealis through binoculars from sailing ships."
