Sir Edward John Poynter (1836-1919) was a British painter, designer, and educator known for his neoclassical and academic style.
He was the eldest son of the famous architect Ambrose Poynter. Poynter spent his early years in France and Italy, which greatly influenced his artistic development, exposing him to classical art and architecture. He later moved to London, where he studied at the Royal Academy Schools and became associated with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. Poynter's early works were influenced by the Pre-Raphaelite style, but he eventually transitioned to a more classical and academic approach.
Poynter gained recognition for his historical and mythological paintings, characterized by their meticulous attention to detail and the use of vibrant colors. One of his most famous works is "Israel in Egypt," a grand composition depicting the biblical story of the Exodus.
Throughout his life, Poynter received numerous awards and honors, including a knighthood in 1896. His legacy includes not only his own artwork but also his impact on British art education and his contributions to the development of neoclassical painting in the 19th century.
