Samuel Palmer (1805–1881) was a British landscape painter and etcher associated with the English Romantic art movement, born in London on January 27, 1805. He showed a talent for drawing from a young age and was encouraged by his father, who was a bookseller.

One of the most significant phases of Palmer's life was his time spent in the village of Shoreham in Kent during the 1820s. He and a group of fellow artists, known as the "Shoreham Ancients," sought inspiration from the countryside and created works that displayed a deep connection to nature and a sense of mysticism.

Palmer was not only a painter but also an accomplished etcher. His etchings often featured intricate details and a dreamlike quality. He produced a series of etchings known as the "The Early Morning" that is particularly famous.

In his later years, Palmer faced financial difficulties and struggled to gain recognition for his work. However, he continued to produce art with a distinct style. His influence on later artists, such as the Symbolists and certain aspects of the Pre-Raphaelite movement, became more evident in the late 19th century.

Although Palmer faced some challenges during his lifetime, his work experienced a revival in the 20th century. His art is now highly regarded, and his contributions to British Romanticism are celebrated.
