At Wedgwood, Makeig-Jones quickly moved from apprentice to staff designer, breaking new ground in the company’s tradition. Her first major innovation, the “Ordinary Lustres” of 1914, featured vibrant, iridescent glazes and playful motifs, an artistic balm during wartime Britain. The following year she unveiled her masterpiece: the Fairyland Lustre series. These extraordinary ceramics dazzled with rainbow glazes and fantastical scenes of fairies, goblins, and magical landscapes. Heavily inspired by fairy-tale books and the fluid lines of Art Nouveau, each piece shimmered with jewel-like colors and gold detailing.
