Imagine our surprise here at Formstad when we received a request from Magnus Palm, who had recently sold parts of his ceramic collection through us, asking if we could also help with his collection of Moomin items and Tove Jansson memorabilia.
What now? Did he collect Moomins too? Well, apparently. It involved handmade Moomin dolls and small ceramic figurines, but also first editions of Tove Jansson's books, many of which are incredibly rare. Of course, we wanted to be involved in facilitating such a unique collection to the market. Interest in Moomins and Tove Jansson has exploded in recent years, especially outside Sweden and Finland.
Magnus told us that his Moomin collecting really took off in 2014 when he compiled a classic edition of the Scandinavian Retro magazine for the 100th anniversary of Tove Jansson's birth:
-I read everything I could find, got in touch with collectors, started mapping and studying in detail, and became more and more fascinated by the world that Tove Jansson had created with the Moomins. What caught my attention the most was that there didn't seem to be any "normal" characters in the Moomin world, everyone was odd and special, but in a friendly and accepting way; from a Sniff who is a little scared and timid to a vain Little My with a ring in her ear. For me, collecting Moomins, Hemulens, and Fillyjonks became the most natural thing in the world, and I filled my home with them. They have brought me great joy over the years.
Now, there are 154 items being auctioned from Magnus Palm's Moomin collection. Among them is a real gem, a dedication from Tove Jansson in the first edition of "The Invisible Child," in the form of an original drawing depicting Moominpappa under a rose, Snufkin smoking his pipe, and an angry Little My. Other nice items include the first English edition of "What happened next?" in top condition, first editions of the first Moomin books, a total of 38 of the coveted Moomin dolls from Atelier Fauni, and a plethora of small ceramic figurines.
