There is an expression for when something like this happens. It's called when reality surpasses fiction. This time it occurred in an old summer cottage outside Linköping. It was about to be sold, and during the sale, the attic was cleared out. And there, under the floorboards, it was found - poster art. The forgotten kind. It had apparently been used as insulation material (!). And there it could have remained, if it weren't for the reality and the greatness in it that not even a poem can compare to.
The result - the first part - is what we are facing now. Gomér & Andersson in Linköping presents Poster Art Part 1, an incredible theme auction with over 100 lots. The material comes from a time when the film was still young and sometimes even silent. From a time when cinemas had something magical about them, a time when projectionists attached large film reels with both arms and manually operated the projectors. And perhaps it was the case that everything was more elegant then, at least the movie posters were. Before they were reproduced, they were hand-painted by masterful professionals, graphic designers, advertisers, and artists all at once.
Pop open a box of popcorn and take a little extra time to study these originals that are both film history and a painting bonanza at its very best.
Welcome to Gomér & Andersson Linköping and to the heyday of cinemas!
