What is resale right?

Resale right is also known as droit de suite.

By European law (EG directive 2001/84/EG), a resale fee applies when selling certain works of art onward. The fee retributes the author or his heirs for 70 years after his death.

The fee is usually paid on the buyer invoice, but for items sold by a Spanish auction house, the seller pays instead.

The fee amounts to 5% of the hammered price or lower and is calculated in almost the same way in all countries. If you would like to read more about this:

If this fee applies, the item page will inform you about it, and it will be included in the total amount you see before confirming a bid.
