Gottfrid Kallstenius was a multifaceted artist. He has executed a number of public decorations and altarpieces and several strongly symbolist works, the two most famous being the monumental paintings “Den Saliga”, from 1900-1907, sold at Stockholms Auktionsverk in 2009 for the record price of 960,000 kronor and included in the much-discussed Symbolist exhibition at Prince Eugens Waldemarsudde in 2015, and “Elysium” from 1914, both depictions of a afterlife. In 1913, Kallstenius received the commission from Axel Ax:son Johnson to depict the different areas of activity of Nordstjernan and the Johnson Group. For this he received for five years an annual apanage of 20,000 kronor, an astronomical amount at the time. For the management floor at Stureplan 3 in Stockholm, he executed thirteen large paintings over the following five years, each 3 m. high with a total length of 28 m. The paintings today offer a powerful view of all the Johnson Group's operations.
In 1927, Kallstenius contracted a severe pleurisy and pneumonia and was rehabilitated for a long time at the Red Cross Hospital in Stockholm, located on Riksmarskalkens vägen, Norra Djurgården, which had been inaugurated the same year. The lack of artistic decoration in the halls, prompted Kallstenius after his recovery to execute forty-two paintings between the years 1928-30 in small format which he donated to the hospital. In connection with this pioneering deed, in 1929 he wrote an article in Svenska Dagbladet, “Konsten på en”, in which he advocated artistic decoration of hospitals and rehabilitation institutions costed through lotteries. Ten of these paintings are now being offered by Stockholms Auktionsverk for sale. All of them have until relatively recently decorated the premises of the Red Cross in Bergshamra outside Stockholm. The motifs of the paintings are taken from the archipelago of Norra Tjust next to the spa town of Källvik outside Loftahammar, where Kallstenius built a summer house with studio in 1903.
