Johannisborg Castle was named after Duke Johan of Östergötland (1589-1618), son of King Johan III. The architect behind the castle project was Hans Fleming. The castle was supposed to prevent the city of Norrköping from hostile attacks from the coast, but by 1719 Johannisborg was so dilapidated, that it could not prevent the Russians burning Norrköping. In 1806, the remaining gate tower was destroyed by a lightning strike. The gate tower was restored in 1934 and covered with a new roof.
