Oil on canvas, 40 x 71 cm. Signed Andr. Hanson and dated 1917.
With brilliant brushwork, the painter Andreas Hanson has captured the movements of the water on a spring winter day in Gästrikland. The year is 1917. The Japonism that at this time made a strong impression on artists in Europe is visible in the long narrow format. The focus is on the foreground of the landscape while in this case the horizon line is barely discernible. The water mirrors and the light are rendered with an Impressionist feel, but the painting of the auction also has influences from the evocative landscape painting of the Rackstad Group. A painting that breathes early modernism. The undulating play and forms of the soft lines in times of the breakthrough of Art Nouveau.
Andreas Hanson himself never achieved a breakthrough, but belongs to the forgotten names in the history of art. He is represented at the County Museum Gävleborg - but by all accounts his artistic output was extremely limited.
