Description

gouache, 21,5 x 29 cm

LOCATION: Birgitta Andersson, Lidingö
Christopher O'Regan Collection

EXHIBITOR: J C Linnerhielm, Prince Eugens Waldemarsudde, Stockholm

Christopher tells us:
Alongside Elias Martin, Jonas Carl Linnerhjelm appears as a landscape painter of rank in late 18th and early 19th century Sweden, but unlike Martin, Linnerhjelm worked on an extensive work of travelogues of his travels through the country which he also printed and published starting in 1797; a fantastic odyssey through Gustavian Sweden. The fact that Linnerhjelm seems to have been close to the circle of Elias Martin and his brother, the Royal Court Engraver Johan Fredrik, suggests the fact that in 1805 he lived in Johan Fredrik's property at Regeringsgatan no. 74 — the very year he began publishing his large pictorial work Svenska vyer, where we know that two of the engravings are from watercolour models by Linnerhjelm from the 1780s.. The small watercolour now being auctioned was painted by Linnerhjelm a few more years before that, when he was twenty-five years old.
